Congratulations to John Thurso, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness and owner of the castle overlooking Thurso East. Lord Thurso was awarded 'best parliamentary beard 2008' by that well known campaign group, the Beard Liberation Front. He must be as thrilled by the award as Thurso's locals are by the awesome reef on their doorstep.
Turning to more conventional surfing matters, I learn from Robert Simper's excellent book The Lugger Coast that at least one old fisherman from Bude recalls "the first surfers [there] in 1911." Apparently they "simply rode the waves ashore on a plank."
I've heard talk before of Bude being one of Britain's most venerable surfing communities, but does anyone else out there know more? Peter Robinson, for example?

Something to an optimist every change is a change for the better.
