First surf yesterday in over two months (since I broke two ribs). The surf gods were smiling: Sennen Cove was about 3ft on the sets, clean and offshore. Crowded when I arrived (at 6pm) but soon there were some peaks to be found. My ribs were tender, and I don't think I could have surfed longer than the hour I spent in the water, but I had a couple of lovely rides. Nice to see some of the locals again - the likes of Allie (nice left as I walked back to my car), Mick, Lew and Simon.
Strapping my extremely knackered K-Bay 9"1' to the roof, disaster struck: a bungee cord snapped back and hit me in the eye. The impact sent me to the floor, rolling around in agony. The Harkon witnessed this and wondered, as did I, what fresh calamity had arrived. Fortunately, the bastard bungee missed my pupil and connected only with the white of my right eye. There was blood, but not blindness.
I can't help but note that the past 21 months have been filled with one disaster after another, but then again, you can't keep a good man, or a clinically deranged one, down. And thus I can also report that on Friday evening I completed the Newlyn to Penzance swim, and came second in a poker game. From the sublime to the ridiculous, via an injury or two.
Aloha and thanks to Aerial Atttack, who snapped me as I reflected upon the fact that just about everyone else doing the Newlyn to PZ swim was wearing a wetsuit.
